Feeding a family of four on $50.00 a week is no easy task, however, not impossible. With some helpful tips and some practice, it is possible to manage to feed a family of four on just 50 dollars a week.

How to feed a family of four on $ 50.00 a week

Prefer store brands

Store brands are always cheaper, and most of the times do not lack in quality compared to brand names. Take some time to compare store brands at different stores as well as their prices to be able to make an informed decision. Do not go from buying big brand names to buying store brands within a day. Make the transition slow so that every family member will be able to get used to it. Start with buying two store brands a week and gradually increase the number to four store brands a week, until you reach the point where you buy only store brands.

Prefer family size

When it comes to a family of four, family size products should be preferred, as they both last longer and cost less. Just make sure that every food product you buy in family size is definitely going to be consumed by all four family members. There is no point in buying yogurt in family size if it is going to be consumed mostly by you.

Buy in bulk

When it comes to products that you use on a regular basis (if not on a daily basis), buying in bulk is  definitely cost -effective. Products that are bought in bulk last longer and their overall price is considerably lower than it would be if you had bought them separately. Milk, eggs, orange juice, yogurt,  fruits and vegetables can all be bought in bulk. The only thing you need to be concerned about is consuming them before their expiration date, otherwise you will have spent money for nothing.

Use leftovers

Instead of throwing away leftovers after meals, keep them to make new meals. You can keep those new meals in the fridge for days. Sunday is ideal to prepare meals for the following week. That way, you reduce your visits to the grocery store and that means that you spend less money on food.

Avoid takeouts

Ordering takeouts may be the easy choice when you are too tired or too bored to cook, when the children want to eat something quick and easy or when they want to watch a football game. However, this is going to cost a lot of money, money that can be put to better use. If you are looking for ways to feed your family of four with just $ 50.00 a week, this is definitely not the way to go.

Avoid eating at restaurants

While not eating at restaurants at all is a bit extreme, eating at restaurants every week is definitely not cost-effective for a family of four. Do not eat out more than once a month and when you do, pick a small, local restaurants, with reasonable prices. For even better results, skip the appetizers and the deserts and focus on the main dishes.

The above tips will hopefully be helpful enough to every family of four that cannot afford more than $ 50.00 a week on food.
